Today in class we started off with a quiz on the reading like we do every Thursday. After the dreaded quiz, we decided to talk about the presidential debate and our personal opinions on how it went. Personally, I think that both candidates were very childish but President Trump really showed how rude he truly is and just avoided direct answers to the questions being asked by the mediator. He wouldn’t let Biden get through a clear thought without interrupting him thus leaving the audience with no clear answers to their questions. Lastly, President Trump was asked to address the white supremacy groups in the U.S and instead said he could but wasn’t going to which ultimately shined a racist light on him and his platform.

Apart from the debate, Professor Sandridge allowed us to choose our topic of discussion today and Macy suggested personality disorders as the main focus. We were discussing why people behave this way and came to the conclusion that it’s either based off of experiences or purely biologically embedded in their minds.

A few questions from class to ponder:

  • Do we stigmatize people with personality disorders or even try to involve them?
  • Can people with personality disorders be good leaders?
  • Are you a narcissist?

Terry made a statement in class in regards to people knowing that they are crazy and it really stuck with me. He said, “The craziest people are those who know they are crazy.” This made me connect to the mad hatter from Alice in Wonderland and how he said all the best people are those who are crazy. I think that people can realize they are crazy or mentally unstable or have some sort of disorder but not be able to stop themselves so they have to sit and watch while their minds and bodies take over. People want to poke fun and ridicule those that are different from what is seen as “normal” when in reality we should be trying to invite them in and make them feel seen rather than trapped with no way out.

After the discussion of personality disorders, Professor Sandridge split us up into groups for a final group project due at the end of the semester. My group members are Windsor, Arianna, Shaniece and Lauryn. We decided to make the disney movie Hercules our main assignment focus which will make for a great mentor vs mentee evaluation as well as personal leadership growth from an outsider perspective.
